Welcome to Famosa Slough

The Famosa Slough is a 37-acre wetland between Ocean Beach and the San Diego Sports Arena area. It is bisected by West Point Loma Boulevard and bordered by Famosa Boulevard on the west. The channel portion of the slough extends from West Point Loma Boulevard, northward, to the San Diego River Channel. The slough is flushed with salt water from the river channel, and also collects rainwater from the surrounding neighborhood.

The 12-acre channel portion and the 25-acre southern portion of the slough are owned and maintained by the City of San Diego. The southern portion was acquired by the city in September 1990. Both portions are accessible by the public, and benches are located at view areas.

Birds Seen at the Slough

On May 2, 2009 four American Avocets hatched on the Slough island. A rare Yellow-crowned Night Heron was seen on May 9. (Photos by Karen Straus)
Steve Pye, a Hi Tech High student, took these photos of a Kingfisher, Forster's Tern, Osprey, and Great Egret while at the September 2007 work party.

In June 2006, Black-necked Stilts nested on the new island area and hatched 17 chicks. An Avocet pair produced three chicks. Nesting in 2007 produced at least 12 Avocet and Stilt chicks. Similar numbers of Stilt and Avocet chicks were observed in 2007. Both Avocets and Stilts hatched in 2008. Photos by Gerry Tietje. Click on the images to enlarge.

West Point Loma Restoration Project

A major restoration along West Point Loma Boulevard has restored 2.2 acres of wetland. The terracing, removal of construction rubble and creation of berms was completed in December 2005. To view the photo record of the restoration, click here

The Friends of Famosa Slough

FRIENDS OF FAMOSA SLOUGH is a group of concerned citizens whose goal is to restore Famosa Slough as a natural wetland preserve. To do this, we have scheduled cleanups and nature walks, work to prevent the degradation of the slough, act as a community voice on the restoration, act as an information source to public agencies, and will work on restoration projects.

Education

An important function of the Friends is to provide environmental education to students of all ages. If you are a teacher or parent interested in using Famosa Slough as a teaching resource, contact the Friends. We can lead groups in nature walks, provide a classroom introduction to wetlands ecology, conduct hands-on water quality monitoring training, or provide mentoring for students working on science fair projects.

Service

If you are part of a service organization, company, school or scout troop seeking an environmental project, contact us for ideas of how you can help at Famosa Slough. We can recommend projects, provide leaders, and guide you in a rewarding wetlands experience.

If you wish to participate, please use the application form (click here for a printable copy) to become a Friend, call (619) 224-4591, or send email to info@famosaslough.org for more information.
